If you’re wondering what to expect during your newborn photography session in Sacramento, here’s the short answer: it should be a calm, supported, and seamless experience from beginning to end. With years of experience photographing milestones for busy mothers, I approach every session with intention. My goal is to create a space rooted in serving, artistry, and presence, where families feel supported and their most meaningful seasons are preserved with intention and beauty.
Many parents come in unsure of what to expect for a newborn photography session and that’s completely normal! My role, as your newborn photographer, is to take that uncertainty off your shoulders so the experience feels effortless and meaningful from the moment you arrive.

Best Time For Newborn Photography Sessions in Sacramento
The best time for newborn photography sessions usually happens within the first 2–3 weeks after your baby arrives, or sometimes around 6–8 weeks. During this time, babies tend to sleep more and naturally curl into those sweet, snuggled positions.
That being said, there’s no strict timeline. Beautiful, connection-filled images can happen at any age. What matters most is flexibility and allowing your baby to lead the pace of the session.

Preparing for a Calm Newborn Session Photography Experience
A little bit of preparation can go a long way in helping your newborn session photography go smoothly and relaxed.
One of the best things you can do is feed your baby right before the session. A full baby is often a content, sleepy baby. Since newborns usually have about a 60-minute wake window, it can help to feed baby about an hour before your newborn photography session begins. When you get there, we’ll take things slowly. You’ll be able to change baby, settle in, and top off with a little more milk, if needed.
On your way to the session, keeping your baby awake (tickle their toes, talk to them, keep them lightly dressed) can help them fall into a deeper sleep once we begin.
Never underestimate the power of being warm and cozy. Babies are most comfortable when they’re warm, so I make sure to set the studio to a cozy temperature. If we’re doing a newborn photography home session, slightly warm up your home ahead of time to help create that same calm, sleepy environment.

Expect to Follow Your Baby’s Lead
Every baby is different, and that’s something to honor during your newborn photography session.
Some babies will sleep deeply from start to finish while others need a bit more coaxing. There’s no right or wrong way, it’s all part of learning your baby and their needs.
We’ll take as many breaks as needed during a 1.5 to 2 hour period for feeding, diaper changes, and cuddling. Nothing is rushed. Newborn photography sessions should be baby-led and allow for everything to unfold naturally.
If you have older children, I recommend bringing a few simple snacks, small treats, or mini marshmallows. We’ll photograph sibling moments early, then give them space to relax or play while we focus on baby.

What To Bring To Your Newborn Photography Session
You don’t need to overpack, but having a few essentials on-hand can make things easier.
I recommend bringing:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- Burp cloths
- A pacifier (if you use one)
- Bottles or formula, if applicable
- A bottle warmer, if needed
We’ll keep everything within reach to make things as easy as possible for you.

What To Wear To Your Newborn Photography Session
One of the details I take care of for you, as the mama, is what to wear to your newborn photography session.
We’ll begin with a wardrobe fitting 4-6 weeks before your session and build the whole family’s wardrobe from there. Everything is selected ahead of time to feel cohesive, soft, and aligned with the style and tone you’ve already set for the photos in your home.
This is part of creating a truly effortless experience. You’re not managing all of the little details. Instead, you’re letting me, as your Sacramento-based photographer, do what I love best, creating a calm, supportive, and seamless experience.
Preparing Your Home (If You’ve Chosen an In-Home Session)
If you’ve chosen a newborn photography home session, there’s no need for your home to be perfect.
We’ll focus on just a few spaces with good natural light, usually near windows. A quick tidy of those areas is more than enough. Clean and simple is best.

Create a Calm, Stress-Free Space
One of the most important things to remember is this: babies can sense stress.
If you’re calm, the smoother things will go. If things don’t go exactly as planned, that’s okay. We can capture some beautiful intimate images from those in-between moments. Soothing them, holding them close, and soaking in every little detail is all a part of the process.
You don’t need to perform or do anything perfectly during your newborn session photography.
I will guide you through everything (from gentle posing to finding the best light) so you don’t need to “perform”, just love on your baby.
What To Expect During Your Newborn Photography Session
When you think about what to expect during your newborn photography session, I want you to picture something simple.
A warm room.
A slow, relaxed pace.
And your baby in your arms.
Moments that are unstaged and raw, without the pressure of perfection.
Your newborn photography session is about presence. It’s about documenting the beginning of your family’s story in a way that feels effortless, calm, and deeply meaningful.
